New Pen Day: Mayfair Pens Noldor - Copper Tortoise

Yay, another early birthday present to myself came in the mail today, my first Mayfair Pens pen! 😀 I was lucky that no one snapped up this beauty from the last drop. I never remember to check on these Mayfair Pens drops until a few hours later, and somehow this pen wasn't already purchased.

A fountain pen made out of a dark resin with swirls of golden brown and silver shimmer, sitting uncapped on a small wooden pen rest, it's cap sitting upright behind the pen grip

It has a dark brown resin, that's shot through with swirls of amber and silver shimmer, making it look like a black coffee that someone just stirred cream into. 😋

My predilection for brown inks kind of morphed into constantly looking out for cool brown pens to match with those inks, so the Copper Tortoise appealed immediately.

The shape of the Noldor is interesting with its tapered grip breaking up what would be a cigar-shaped pen with flat, instead of rounded, ends. The grip reminds me of the exaggerated curved grip of my Kasama Una, but not quite as exaggerated.

I decided to ink the pen with Jacques Herbin Ambre de Birmanie to match the lighter, amber shimmer parts in the resin. I really like that ink; need to buy a bottle of it!

Writing sample written with an amber brown ink: "Mayfair Pens Noldor, F; Jacques Herbin Ambre de Birmanie; [figure-8s, horizontal and vertical lines], 'reverse writing' written with nib upside down; The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

I almost used KWZ Honey, which would've been another good match for the more amber parts of the resin, but it's been a while since I've used Ambre de Birmanie, mainly because I have small cartridges of it, instead of a bottle.

The nib, while I haven't yet written much with it yet, feels well-tuned, even when writing in reverse. It's a smooth writer that shows off shading even though it's a F nib.

I'm super happy with this purchase! I hope I can catch a future drop and pick up another pen using a sought-after blank, but even if I don't, this is a great exemplar for the brand. 🥳

Any tips sent my way will go into other fountain pen purchases that I'll review here, giving you more to read, keeping that virtuous cycle going. Thanks! ✌️
