New New Pen: Black Robin Pens Puck in Copper Collision
The reference to a "new new" pen calls back to my last post about a "new to me" vintage pen. This one is a new pen from a pen maker in the UK, Black Robin Pens. Isn't it a stunner? It looks even better in person. 🤩
I randomly stumbled across someone's Instagram post about the "Puck" pen they bought from Black Robin Pens, and I was instantly transfixed. (Annoyingly I did not bookmark their post, and when I returned to IG, the feed refreshed, so I don't know who to thank for the pointer!) The original poster's Puck did not have as much of a glittery pen body (that I recall), but the cap and end finial shapes totally caught my attention.
I quickly opened Black Robin Pens's website and was amazed that this Puck in "Copper Collision" was available. I hemmed and hawed over the purchase for a little bit because I'd just bought the Omas and really shouldn't have been even thinking about purchasing another pen so soon, but I just could not pass it up. It "helped" that the price was totally reasonable, considering how amazing it looks, and the unique shape of it. I placed the order and waited, figuring I could go through my fountain pen collection and find one or two I wasn't really using anymore to sell and help offset this pen purchase.
I was slightly concerned about how long it would take to ship from the UK, since I've had previous experiences of very long shipping times, but the pen was shipped promptly and arrived surprisingly quickly. Great buying experience so far.
When I opened the box, I was greeted by a black envelope and a wrapped cylinder. I knew I had to take pictures during the unboxing, so here they are:

I opened the envelope first and was greeted by a few things.

First, a certificate of authenticity with all the pertinent information about the pen, like the material used (made in-house), its measurements, creation date, and maker signature. Also, a business card and a cherry lollipop.

I also got a handwritten card from the maker, very nice touch.

Opening the branded tube, the pen was neatly tucked away in a branded felt pouch. Such detailed packaging impressed me. It made the whole unboxing process feel special. What a great lead up to the pen itself!
The material for the caps is Copper Collision, while the pen body is made of Copper Sparkle (fitting!), both made by the pen maker. Because of the swirly nature of the materials, it's not enough to see pictures, though I'll post a couple below. You have to watch the video to see all the details in the cap and end finial/blind cap. There's a swirly bit with blue, gold, and green on the cap that reminds me of a peacock feather. The shimmery copper body looks like sugar in the process of caramelizing. The swirls in the resin evoke the roiling and bubbling of sugary syrup in the pan. Lovely! I anticipate staring at this pen quite a lot before or while using it. It may be too distracting. 😅

I chose a rose gold EF nib for the pen to match, of course. I have a couple other EF JoWos that I like, so I went for it here.
I have not yet inked up the pen. I may wait until the beginning of June, since there will be the monthly turnover of pens to clean out, and I won't go over my already ridiculous (for me) usual batch of 24 pens inked. 🫣 I also know that I have a couple inks from CoffeeMonsterzCo that should be arriving shortly, so I might pick one of those for this pen.
One surprising thing: When I removed the blind cap, I tried to pull out the converter and it didn't want to come out, so I sent an e-mail to the maker to see if this is intentional (like a captured converter filling system). I tend to syringe-fill my converters, as it's less mess for me, especially for a pen like this that has the cap threads at the end of the pen body where a grip would normally be. It wouldn't matter if I couldn't remove the converter, but I figured I'd wait on an answer in case it can and I didn't pull hard enough (for fear of breaking something!).
Anyway, yeah, this is a lovely, lovely pen, and am very happy I stumbled across that random Instagram post that made me aware of this cool UK pen maker. If you like independent makers who create unique pen shapes and striking pen blanks, consider Black Robin Pens.
Thanks for reading. If you like what I write and want to support me, you can buy me a coffee...or tea! I'd appreciate it.
