The top of an orange tabby’s head, showing a small patch of horizontally striped fur between his ears

I have a couple pictures today of this funny little patch of crimped fur on Sprit’s head between his ears. Tabbies typically have the stripes going vertically down the middle of their heads, but a few days ago when Sprite was sitting in direct sunlight, I noticed this small patch of narrowly spaced, horizontal stripes on his head between his ears. At first I thought it was just a quirky patch of brownish stripes on his head, similar to how he has right, narrow stripes on the insides of his front legs. But looking more closely, the fur is actually textured, like he took the tiniest hair crimping tool from the 80s and crimped his fur!

Closer, angled look at the patch of crimped fur on Sprite’s head

It’s hard to see in this close-up, but I tried to capture his fur at an angle to show the actual texture. And when I gently pet this part of his head, I can feel the slight waviness of his fur there. It’s funny! 😄

I did a quick search and saw some articles mention breeds of cats with this kind of textured fur, but the cats (Rexes) have this fur all over. I don’t know why Sprite grew this small patch of fur on his head. I’m pretty sure it is a recent development. How weird! What a mystery. 🤔
